back from Hungary, trip report, long
Hello,
Tina & me just returned from a Scirocco-trip to Hungary.
( former socialist country in eastern europe )
We visited list member Macsek there, he lives
together with his lovely wife and his cute 1/2 year old son
in Budapest, the capital of this nice country.
I took my '84 GTX for the trip, to test it and due to
it has a much softer suspension than my '83 GTX.
But I learned my lesson there, a car that runs well in Germany
need not be as good in another country.
The quality of roads is different there, so way to often
my wheels were scratching in the wheel wells, the rubber is coming off
in pieces from the tires and the strut bearings are completely shot.
anyway it was fun driving there, the people there are driving quite
agressive,
and I got used to that easily and mostly I liked it :-)
the first night, when we arrived , we met another Scirocco 16v driver
named Zoltan and his girl there, so we drove upon a hill and
claimed the first Scirocco meeting in Budapest :-)

is the picture we took, with the skyline of the Budapest city behind.
You can see from left to right :
Zoltan with his GTX 16v, me with the 8v GTX and Macsek with his 16v
Their cars are in good shape, it was a pleasure to look at them.
While our girls were fascinated about the view of the skyline,
we just turned around and looked at our cars. :-)
A few days later I drove Macseks 16v, it is well maintained
and so it was running good.
While I was driving his 16v,
a car of russian make ( Lada ) tried to race us.....
... he passed us with his roaring "vodkaboy-exhaust"
in the city while we were just cruising, and
Macsek encouraged me to catch him after he turned on a bigger road.
Well as you can guess, it was not to difficult to catch this nasty
low-tech pilot in spite of he tried to escape with some
hazardous maneuvres and reckless driving.
Unfortunately he lost his nerves and tried to pass us again after
the duel was over, touching Macseks 16v at the fender.
Needless to say that he escaped long before we discovered the damage.
I'm sorry that this happened and I'm aware that dueling in a foreign
country with a car that does belong to a friend hasn't been the best idea of
all...
I want to thank Macsek & his wife Kriszti
for the nice days we had in Hungary,
it was really nice to meet another list member in person again, it's
funny that we can talk "Scirocco" worldwide and that "broken keyboards"
are as amusing in Hungary as they are in California :-), as well as the
"fastest, quickest and cleanest Scirocco..." is known of course :-))
damn, I love this list and I'm happy to be on it !
Thanks for listening to these ramblings
