When I had this problem in my 16v cabbie project, it turned out to be the
hall sender. When I replaced the distributor, it started firing. The one I
started with came with a lot of junkyard stuff I cobbled together, so I
guess it was no surprise.

I think you can get the hall sender kit to install on the distributor...
much less expensive.
