Re: Ohh my heartache-Mk1 16v don't like me

Awesome.. But, A8 was melted on my old box. What sense does that make? It
doesn't look like there ever was a pin or wire in the harness in position
A8, and the fuel pump relay has been located on top of the box with an
extension feed. So the recall's been done. Right. But why would A8 be
melted? Would it be because the relay was having occasional problems and
then the recall was out which fixed it, and they fixed the wiring, but
didn't fix/replace the fuse box? If they didn't replace the fuse box, it
left it in iffy shape. This is making more and more sense.

Wow. This is deep. This is almost mind-bending. I plugged the extension
relay harness into relay position "L" on the fuse box.

I know the jumper's there. I'll check continuity to terminal 1. You're
saying A3 and A5 should be routed to coil terminal 1, right?

Well, it was explained to be that only older cars without the transistorized
breakerless ignition system had these wires. My '81 with O2 sensor did not
have this wire, and it still doesn't.

What confused me on this is that my old Bentley tells me that '81 Scirocco's
sold out of California do NOT have this breakerless transistorized ignition
system and therefore no O2 sensor.

It's wrong. Mine DOES have it and an O2 sensor.

The Bentley also goes on to say in the wiring tracks that I have no O2
sensor or ICU or any of those goodies. Which screws me up even more.

I'm now using the diagram from an '81 Jetta. It has the O2 sensor, O2
computer and all that jazz. I'm only assuming the electrical system is
exactly the same. I don't see why it shouldn't. Both cars were produced in
Germany using the same electronics.

HAHA! Everything works, except the following:

If I turn the key to the on (15) position, the following things happen:

OXY light doesn't light
The alternator charging light doesn't come on,
The coolant temp round blinking LED sometimes blinks twice and fades, or it
blinks like 5 times (what it normally should) and stops blinking abruptly
(like it should)

Well, ok, they sometimes come on. Sometimes after trying to start the car.
Sometimes never.

The fuel pump will not prime, nor will the fuel pump relay click after the
pump is done priming.

One relay clicks as the key turns.. I'm assuming it's the load reduction
relay.

Now, the car has an Oxygen Sensor relay from the car's old CIS system. Since
I put in the 16v 1.8l with the whole CIS-E deal, what is the ultimate fate
of this O2 relay and related components?

I'm going outside again now to test and retest each component and check
continuity of every wire I can find.

Besides, the registration on my Oldsmobile runs out today, and the
Scirocco's still registered. Which means I have about 4 hours of daylight to
get this car to run or I'm driving illegally.
