First off, congrats on your acquisition.
Second. For 2k you have a lot of options. Doing a 2.0 16V swap ld be a
stretch as a donor car would be optimal. I spent about 1k on my 2.0 8v
swap, and from there you can do all kinds of mods down the line. like
adding a turbo, for example. Plus when staying with 8v's you are keeping
99% of your engine compartment the same. (BTW, I have a 2.0 8v and I
love it)
A 1.8 16V is also very do-able for 2k, so long as you do the work.
Basically just get a wrecked scirocco 16v with intact mechanicals and
transfer the whole lot.
Even cheaper would be to get a JH engine, and plop that in there. Quick,
simple and lots of power for a MK1
