RE: 2.0L 9A Block
<x-charset iso-8859-1>Passat Bentley says 10:1 for both 2.0 16V (9A), just like the 1.8 16V.
CIS-E doesn't HAVE a knock sensor because it is a fuel injection system, not
an ignition system. Knock sensors are part of a separate ignition system on
*some* CIS-E cars, those with 10:1 compression ratios such as 16V. (I'm not
sure about which factory 10:1 compression 8V engines were equipped with
CIS-E. Maybe the 8V GTI/GLI during 85-87. Most 10:1 8V from 1988 on used
Digifant or something else.)
Right-o. A knock sensor is more like a small microphone (someone said
"crystal" but it's probably a piezo-electric element) that is "tuned" to
respond to the frequency range that detonation (knock) produces when you
torque that mounting bolt. And yes, Bill, this is something you're going to
need if you are running 10:1 or higher compression.

Yes, the 88 CIS-E system has a knock sensor
Compression with a 1.8 head on the 9A block will be 10:1,
A knock sensor senses engine knock (say that 5 times fast) via sound waves
travelling through the block and then the computer will retard the timing
until no knock is sensed.
