You skipped the most crucial step, degreasing the oil pan and the bottom
of the block.
I use 2+2 carb cleaner and it works great.
Btw, I hear new oil pans from the dealer are less than $20.
As far as the "goop", does it recommend anything on the package, if it is
cork usually high tack to hold it in place is recommended.
