Benefit of knock sensor?

<x-charset iso-8859-1>I was working on my brother's A2 GTI this weekend and noticed the knock
sensor bolted to the block.  Is there any benefit to putting one of these on
my '84 'roc with a stock engine?  It seems the only difference is that I
could maybe advance the ignition timing a bit, and it would automatically
retard when necessary.  Is this how it works?
