Re: ski racks:
Try both Yakima (sp?) and Thule racks. They are modular in design
(meaning you buy the basic rack and then attachments for skis,
snowboards, bikes, canoes, etc.) The plus is that they are very
versatile. You can use the ski attachment in winter, then switch over to
bikes for the summer, and go with the simple bars if you need to lug
around something big (like, say, a 32 foot extension ladder. You get odd
with one of those things on top...). Also, you can usually switch
between cars for the price of new mounting brackets, which are somewhere
in the neighberhood of $20 - 30 (If I remember correctly. I bought it a
long time ago and this is what my guess is for what they should cost
now.). The down side? Expensive, look to spend some $300. They can
usually be found at any ski or bike shop.
I have a Yakima that was bought for my Scirocco and switched over to the
Jetta when I got it. The thing works nicely, and it is still holding up
strong, ready to carry the X-mas tree home this year...
