<x-flowed>The problem is in the gear selector piece that has the dogs in it for detent 
between the gears and what VW did is make cutouts in the selector squarish 
in stead of roundish like the later model cars. So, subsequently the stress 
from shifting goes to that weak point and the selector housing acually 
splits and cracks and instead of the sliding surface being flat it is now 
conical and it wont allow you to force the selctor out of gear. Been there 
done that on my wifes car. except it was 2nd. oh and BTW tranny code ws FF.
