Sidewinder II???

I was looking at some old car show photos recently and came across a cool
photo I took at Volkfest 1997 in Milwaukee. It was a white Mk I in the
parking lot that had "Sidewinder II" badging on the lower part of the doors
on both sides.  It looked like it came from the showroom of some 1980's VW
dealer....It looked brand new....

What is the story behind the "Sidewinder" and how many were made.
