Help... (long)
Ok gang, I'm a wee bit puzzled at this point.
Patient: '81 Scirocco S, 1.7l, basically stock.
Symptoms: Stock fuel distributor, car would not idle.
Tries to run at about 200 rpm, but won't. Rev up to idle
or above and it seems ok, but has a miss. Replace fuel
distributor with a larger one (80mm vs. 60mm) Car at least
idles, high, (1800 rpm) but idles. Miss is still present.
Reset distributor timing from WAAAY far advanced to about 6
degrees ATDC. Car runs, though still idles at about 1500
rpm, still misses, and is sluggish to rev. Replace fuel
distributor again with another small style (needed the
large one back) and it took 5-8 tries to start. Will NOT
run without my foot on the gas. Also noted at startup that
it backfired a couple times when it did manage to start.
Stumbles terribly when you hit the gas up to about 1500
rpm, then revs fine, except of course for this annoying
miss.
Does anybody have any clue as to what this could be? Even
with the larger fuel distributor, the car had the miss that
was constantly present at any rpm range - this was even
quite noticable while driving. I'm beginning to wonder if
the cam / intermediate shaft timing has slipped. This of
course looks like a real PITA to fix according to the
Bentley. What else might I be able to check before diving
into that?
All this annoyance just so I can sell the car...
