oh no - clutch going?

My 87 Scala is doing some strange business! After going on long journeys
I've recently found the gears a little more difficult to engage. Yesterday
though it gets worse, normally the biting point on the clutch was high up,
now the clutch starts to bite only just off the floor, a little further it
disengages again and then bites normally at the original point. Two biting
points?! Does anyone know what on earth is going on? There's quite a loud
whiring noise as the clutch engages as well. If this is a new clutch job,
can anyone recommend a make?
