Stumper. WTF. New one to me. Anyone?
Heres my newest dilemma that's been in the works for about 3 weeks now.
Driving down the freeway, (Usually 20 miles or more.) exit the freeway
and while on surface streets the car shuts off.
Its also happened to me on the freeway. Cuts out like its got water in
the fuel. Clears out and runs fine. (Well, as fine as it can run with 2
bent exhaust valves. The new head gets picked up on friday.)
Its recently happened to me while pulling into a parking spot. I can
crank and crank and it wont start. The tach doesn't move, usually the
tach will bounce slightly when you crank it over. Nadda.
Symptoms:
Tach drops to zero.
Immediate loss of power.
Power loss id usually for .5-2 seconds but it usually keeps on running.
Tach drops to zero- That tells me that the ignition is cutting out. I
cant really hear the fuel pump so I cant say if its running or not. I say
the fuel pump is running because it runs again after a second or two and
most of the time there is a loud as a gunshot -pop-, sometimes 2 pops in
quick successions.
I replaced the fuel pump relay and it didn't help. Then I used my trusty
jumper wire and it started. I think that was quite by accident. I put in
the old relay for my uneventful trip home. However when I got to the
driveway and went to restart the car, it wouldn't. Reinstalled the jumper
wire (I could hear the pump run) but it didn't start. Messed with the
coil wires. Nadda. Just let it sit for a few minutes and it started up
again.
Is this the coil going bad? Maybe its getting hot enough for it to shut
off? Dunno.
I disconnected my rev limiter and my coil amp thinking one of the two
might be causing the problem. I get the feeling its possibly the coil,
but probably not. Or its the ignition brain. One of the two.
Ideas?
