G60 Questions, Boost kick in, (Long)(for a rocco)
OK I've been thinking over the route of my new block. I was just
going to build a 2.1 16v naturally aspirated motor with high compression and
an electromotive map able brain. No biggie been done before and it would
probably be a fun motor.
Then I was thinking I've built a 1.9 16v high compression motor which
is fun but loud and narrow power band. How would the auto industry get rid of
this problem. forced induction? OK so now I'm thinking a turbo or super
charger on the block. Now the problem is I have to decide where I want the
boost to really kick in. With a turbo I have a choice of how slow or how fast
it will spool up.
Now if I was going to have a turbo I would want it to build up good
pressure in its mid range so I would have a insane top end. Well, 16v bottom
end power isn't that great. NOS would work to get rid of lag but I don't want
that I can just do that to my motor now and avoid building a new motor. Then
I was thinking twin turbo's running sequentially like an RX7. But it doesn't
look like I would have enough room for two small turbos. Well, maybe really
small ones and I don't think I would be happy doing that work to have two
tiny turbos with little boost.
Now comes the G charger question. Can I get a g charger to build
power in the low and mid range and have the turbo take over in the mid and
high end. I've seen this done in a few Porsche 911s. But they aren't using G
chargers. Most of the ones I saw where custom geared for specific boost
pressure at specific Rpm's. Can I get something like that done to a G charger?
Now I know there are other chargers out there but I want to stick to
a G charger. I haven't decided on a turbo yet. One thing I did decide on was
I was going to have a High compression and low boost charger or chargers.
Probably the 9.5 to stock 10.1 range on the block before boost build up.
Another thing I'm taking from Porsche guys.
Another question is how do turbos deal with knock. Last I heard more
then 12.1 to 1 compression would cause knock and detonation. Do they use dual
knock sensors or is it in the ECU's mapping to deal with that. If its the ECU
I would have no problem. If its not then well Hmm I have more problems to
deal with then hood and engine bay clearance.
Thanks for the time for reading this.
Oh if you got nothing nice to say keep it to yourself and lets not let this
get out of hand on the list.
Thanks
~Danny~
