Hey, I had the same problem with my car. Keep in mind mine is an '82, I
am not sure about the differences. On my car it turned out to be the
mechanical part of the ignition switch. It was really lose and sloppy
and would not spring back to the run position perfectly every time. I
got one from a junk yard and had a key made for 15 bucks and it worked
fine. To "hot wire" my car you need to connect the black wires together
with the red. Then momentarily touch the red/black wire to those wires
and release after car starts. That is how it is on my car at least. On
mine the fuel pump only runs briefly (second or so) when power is first
applied until car starts.
