question about battery location on a 16v

My dad recently bought an 88 16v, the guy he bought it from put a 
new battery in it for him, the problem is this, there is a wire 
harness with 3 wires in it that comes out of the structure that sits 
on top of the air filter, and it is blocking the battery from sitting 
corrctly in it's pan, and as such he can't get the clamp in on the 
front to hold the battery in place. we looked all through the bentley 
and everything appears to be in the right place, but this harness is 
blocking the battery, what gives?
