Re: Bitten by the bug hard . . The Audi Bug!
Okay, this is what I think. For starters, decide whether you want a race or a street
car. -a boy racer or a gentleman's car. If you want to go the inexpensive hotrod route
then go for the VW. The Rabbit GTi has the most goods straight outta the box. But why go
for the best stock car when you're going to revamp everything in the end anyway.
Following that logic, I'd juice up a Mk1 Scirocco. Accept no substitutes...
Now, if you want a more civilized daily driver without much easy tuning potential, then
go for the 2WD Audi Quattro. The stock parts are pretty cheap and the car is much more
comfortable than the A1 Veedubs. The ultimate, of course, would be the Ur Quattro; and
it'll have the highest price tag, too. If you can afford it, GO FOR IT! If you have any
question, don't even think about it. Make sure that you know Jergen and his brother
Wilhelm, the factory trained German mechanics recommeded by the Quattro Club of America.
Get the picture?
I know that this will seem like blasphemy, but if I was starting all over again, at this
point I'd go for a 1988-89 *Mazda 323 GTX*. Let's see, for maybe $3500, you get a car
with an engine that's easily tuneable to over 180hp for less than a grand. AND, you get
a great AWD drivetrain in a chassis that has a wheelbase identical to an A1 car. Oh, and
then there's the power windows, door locks, etc... The only bad thing is that they tend
to break transmissions. -small price to pay...
