Exhaust coughing

Can anyone please help me. 
I've just recently had my scirocco cryptic tuned and since then there is
a coughing sound coming from the exhaust. I took the car back to the
mechanic and he said all sciroccos which have been tuned up and are not
an injection do this. It only happens when its idling. Anyone else had
this problem. Its a 1986 GT. with a weber carb. Its also got a BIG bore
exhaust.
