I just bought one [thinner head gasket] for my 2liter project. I talked with potter he saidYeah, I've got those bits on the shelf -ready to go in there. Unfortunately, my project 'rocco is still a shell with tons of hotrod parts still collecting dust in the garage. -Gotta just motorvate and get down to rebuilding this thing. Then again, since I began this thing two years ago, I've been able to dispel a lot of bench racing myths that would have taken me down that path of eternal tuning darkness. Nah, mean?
I should be fine. the best thing to do is run a low temp thermostat
and fan switch. I bought a 160 deg thermostat. keep the temps down and
good fuel reduces the chance of ping.
I've got a swappable "motorsports" hood that I've been preparing, too. It has a lot of vents and scoops in it and should look pretty damned PHAT! If this car is going to overheat, it isn't going to be because I can't get the hot air out.
potter runs a mkI with 11.5:1 in Southern CA with no probs...Jeez! Not that is pretty radical! Damn... Has he described his build method? -how about the results? What kind of driving and everyday characteristics does it have? I've outlined my goals already, but here they are again: -about 170hp, lots of mid-range torque, ability to run 93 octane gas (with 94 as an aid), great throttle response, and *total reliability*. I've got all the on-paper technique down but making it all work is quite another thing.
btw what are you using for cams? just curious?Dude, I'm totally in the dark here. Here are my perceptions:
Schrick 260s: way expensive/ well-known results/not enough gain anyware
in powerband to warrant expense
Scrick 268s: way expensive/ well-known results/ tons of top end - nasty
drop in lowend torque (YUCK)
"stock" European intake: good value/ well-known results/ mild but noticeable
midrange increase -probably the best for a stock 1.8l but not enough for
a worked 2.0l
Kent "Fastroad": way expensive/ little-known results/ big increase
in midrange/ fair top end -probably exactly what I want but does
it work in the first place? We can't trust ec magazine can we? The May
'98 had a cam comparison article in it, I think...
Autotech 16v set: Eh?... AUTOTECH? :^( They say it is the biggest-best
answer to everything, of course... Here's what they say about their
product:
(snip)Autotech Sport 16V Cam Set NEW! Ground on Autotech's own, custom manufactured, chill-hardened billets, our new Sport 16V camshafts achieve power levels higher than the benchmark Schrick 260 with far better low-end torque and drivability. Great idle characteristics with 5 more peak HP and up to 12 more ft.lbs. of torque than the 260's. Tests showed a gain of 16 HP at the wheels over stock US cams on a GTI 2.0L using a Dynojet® chassis dyno.
This sounds like the answers to all of my needs. Again, though. Can we trust friggin' AUTOTECH? Any thoughts?Without question, the best street-legal performance cams for your 16V. Specs are: Intake 10.2mm x 252°; Exhaust 10.9mm x 264°; 114° L.C. SportTuned Valve Springs recommended (10.109.602K)
