Let's start with the simple stuff . . .

The idle is adjusted (primarily) by a hex screw on the back of the throttle body. Sometimes this comes loose (bad o ring) and either causes higher or lower idle. because I am too lazy to replace this 5cent O ring, periodically my idle adjusts up or down (sometimes to the point where it won't idle)

Try adjusting the screw out (towards the rear of the car) and see if the idle is closer to normal. The allen screw needs a 7mm box end or open wrench.
