My experience is with 8V Mk1s but,  I've put a drop or two of motor oil
on the O rings right before insertion. That along with cleaning the
socket should help.

Never had to do more than press them in with my hand while wiggling it
around. 

Hmmm, to recap- 
Keep it clean, wiggle it around with firm, even pressure, and make sure
you have adequate lubrication.
