Re: Carb Conversion? Good Idea for rally car?

How will reliability improve over the CIS fuel injection? I've never had a fuel
injection failure in ten years of VW tuning. Well, a fuel pump crapped out on me
once but I don't think that counts.

The rally guys I know adjust their carbs between each stage sometimes. Start out
at the bottom of the mountain and tune for a richer mixture. Go up 1500 feet in
elevation and now you've got to lean it out a little bit. Today it is hot and
humid; tomorrow it'll be temperate and dry. Yada yada yada... F-that.

This depends on whether our friend here is going for the ultimate performance
level and similar monetary expenditure. Throw in really hot cams and some carbs
and you'll be flying past the *stock* CIS fuel injected cars. However, how about
if you go with a electronically tuneable fuel injection system? There is *a lot*
more potential here. See, the misleading thing with carbs is that they'll
provide the maximum oomph for only a very narrow range of operating parameters.
Have you ever been able to simltaneously tune your carbs for easy starting in
the bitter cold, max power at all rpm ranges, fuel economy, emissions, weather
conditions, etc? I know the answer to this already. Keep in mind, too, that
rally cars *must* be street legal in order to pass tech inspection. Hmm....
Carbs just seem like an unnecessary hassle -especially for a beginner. I'll
concede that, initally, more power can be made cheaply with carbs, but take it
to the top and fuel injection will win every time. I'd recommend the carbs only
if the budget is limited, and experience and the willingness to fiddle is high.
To each his own, though. I always respect differing opinions -even when they are
incorrect.
