Valve noise

I have some valve train noise that sounds like it might be the cam chain on
my 16v.  Is there any way to find out for sure what it is without pulling
everything apart?  It isn't lifters, I know what that sounds like.  I have
also had a hard time timing it too.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
