Cat guts and other mysteries

Well, the more feedback I get from you folks, the more I think my
performance/power problems are a symptom of shredded cat guts.  There are
times when you "feel" it pop, and the power jumps immensely, and when it's
bogging, the RPM's are up around 4500 to 5000 but you will barely be going
30 mph.  And it just "feels" like backpressure to me now.  Finally, the cat
is getting a real resonant tone to it, kind of loud, but not bad.  The last
thing I wonder is (by way of confirmation for me) does this kind of back
pressure cause it to pop (not quite backfire) when you are downshifting and
coming to a stop while in gear and the clutch disengaged?  Lots of crackling
sometimes....
