'Tis a wee bit of a pita. Special tools you will need are
a 8mm triple square, a 30mm socket, and a BIG breaker bar.
(Incidentally, the special tool for removing the teardrop
rim's centercaps is the same size triple square - it's what
I've used.)

Here's how I've done it: Get some penetrating oil (I
prefer an aviation product called Aerocroil, but I don't
know if it's even still available anymore) and spray the
30mm axle nut, then take a sledgehammer and a block of wood
(2x4 is good) and whack it a few times. Then use the
breaker bar and try to break the nut loose. I found that
using about a 3 foot extension helps. :) Even at that, it
may take several tries of spray / whack / try again before
it'll let go. (Yes, I have broken a breaker bar trying to
remove this nut)

Once the nut is loose, jack the front of the car up and
support it properly. (IMPORTANT!) Then take the triple
square and remove the 8 or so bolts holding the driveshaft
to the flange. Warning - they are TIGHT. (If using the
teardrop key as I did, try slipping the VW supplied lug
wrench over the end for more leverage.)

To quote the Bentley, "installation is the reverse of
removal" though you won't need the breaker bar! ;)
