RE: '85 GTI motor
The high compression accounts for some of the gain. The GTI also has the
big valve head, larger throttle body and larger intake runners. In 1986 VW
changed the timing map of the knock sensor ignition to give it another 3
HP.
As a side bar, the engine management system on the 85 & 86 GTI is CIS-E
which unlike motronic is separate from the ignition control system
