Packaging.  They could have put the exhaust manifold on the front, a la
Honda, but I guess they decided routing the downpipe around the engine was
too big a hassle.  If they put everything on the front of the motor the
hood would have to be quite a bit higher than it is now.

Compare the Mk2 interior to that of a Ferrari 308/328.  Looks familiar, eh?
The vent layout and the size and shape of the cluster housing are pretty
similar.  So is the 'slope' of the dash...
