Funny thing that you ask, cuz I was thinking the same thing except that I
was thing of painting the casing red and then possibly clearcoating.  I
once did take an alternator appart, but it was hell trying to put it back
together.  I can't recall how I did it.  I think that it was kinda simple
to do so, but you need to use extreme caution.
