I agree that there is really no fair comparison between the Velocity Kit and
the Quaife. Indeed , the Quaife (arguably) offers the best performance
available but it is highly "cost prohibitive" for most of us. That's one
reason I've gone through A LOT of trouble to make them available at 20 to
25% less than Autotech's list price.
However, I *do* have the Velocity kit installed on my new DFQ ('97 Golf)
tranny and I'm not terribly impressed with its effectiveness. The $99 price
is right, but when you get on the throttle in 1st gear, that 80 ft-lb of
breakaway torque is almost insignificant.
Let's estimate 130 ft-lbs of torque out of a healthy 2.0 liter engine. That
torque is multiplied by 3.45 through first gear and again multiplied by the
3.67 final drive for about 1650 ft-lbs of torque at the wheels (neglecting
losses through the tranny)! I'd have to say 80 is rather insignificant at a
mere 5% of the applied torque.
Whew... and that's BEFORE slippage begins. Static friction is almost
ALWAYS greater than dynamic friction (where the surfaces in contact are
moving with respect to each other).
I'm sure I will install another Quaife when the time and the cashflow is
right. I didn't want to rebuild/tear apart a tranny with only 13k miles on
it.
