Now, I can't find my Scirocco Bentley to see if it's the same on Sciroccos
but, the there is an adjustment for Golfs and Jettas on the steering rack
for tightness/looseness.  Of course you should check for other front end
problems first.

There is an adjustment screw on the rack itself. It is nearly impossible to reach though. You need some special offset wrenches to get to it. It is a royal pain. I would doubt this is your problem unless the rack is really worn out. Does your car have power steering? Is the PS fluid low? I know this might sound stupid but are our tires at the correct pressure? My fronts have a slow leak and when they are low it is nearly impossible to steer at parking speeds.
