Questions, questions, questions.

Just when I thought my car was running better then ever, a few problems
have popped up.  And I was hoping to get some opinions on them.  I'm
really hoping that these are small things.

1.  I have noticed the past couple of days that when accelerating from low
rpm's(if i have my music down and i listen real close), I hear a ticking
sound coming from what sounds like under the dash(maybe inside the engine
compartment) and I don't know what the heck it is.  it goes away after a
few seconds and it only happens at low rpms.  Am i being paranoid and this
is normal, or what?

2.  The other question that i know has been discussed many times, is my
shifter is feeling loose and first gear is hard to get in to at times.
How can I tighten this up and smooth out first gear?
