You can buy a special socket, but IMHO it's a waste of money.

For the top strut nut, I just get the right size socket. Then I get my 
vise grips and set it to go around the "top" [the side where the socket 
wrench would "plug" in] of the socket as tight as I can humanly make it. 
Then, I get the appropriate allen wrench which goes through the center 
of the socket into the strut. I usually put a bar on the end of the L 
shaped allen wrench for leverage. twist and remove.

works for me every time.
