question about which motor to get?

    As most of you know I've recently acquired an 85 Scirocco with the JH
1.8 in it.  I need some advice.

what should I do about the motor?

rebuild it?  As I don't know what kind of work has been done on it and the
odometer currently reads 230,000

replace it with a 2.0l from a newer car
OR
go 16v?

I'm open to any suggestions, but am not wanting to pour a life savings into
this car.  I just want a good sporty motor that will last a while.
