[tech] [gas tank] pre-transfer pump tanks [FI]

In this case the tank is a 1981 Scirocco.

I suspect that there is residue or something worse in the tank.

I want to look into the tank.

My bentley indicates that there is a fuel filter of some type (fuel 
pickup filter). So i takes the rear seat out. There is a round plate 
with three screws. I removes it. Voila! There is the sender plug. Is 
this thing threaded?

basically, I'd like to get all the crap out of the tank. The car has 
been sitting for several years. I got it started yesterday - but I could 
not keep it running. The fuel pump was complaining like it was trying to 
pump goo or something.

Any help appreciated.
