Re: I've got shifting woes!
Replacing the oil might fix the crunch going to 2nd. Difficulty going
into 1st could be just a case of needing adjustment. To replace the
bushes, you'll need to get a bush replacement kit from your dealer,
about $20-$30 I would think.
I changed them on my car last week and it was pretty easy once I
worked-out what was going on. It made a big difference to the feel of
the gears. There are 4 soft plastic bushes, some smaller hard top-hat
style bushes and several (4 i think) soft spongy washers. To replace
these you need to do the following:
There is a long rod running from the bottom of the gear lever forwards,
with a box section on the other end of it. This box has a ball inside
it which is on the end of a flat plate. This plate is bolted on to the
bottom end of a vertical shaft. On the top of the vertical shaft there
is a horizontal rod held in place by a spring clip at either end.
Remove this rod: the smaller set of soft bushes are what this rod sit
in at either end. Undo the bolt (13mm nut) at the bottom of the vertical
shaft and the shaft will pull up out of its guides. The guides hold the
larger set of soft bushes.
Remove the 2 control rods with the plastic ball-joint connectors on
their ends: there is a clip fastener on the front of each balljoint
which you need to pop open to remove them. The soft washers sit under
the balljoint connectors. While the control rods are off, remove the
pivot assembly which is bolted on to the diff casing (bolt runs right
thru diff case). Alternatively just remove the pivot itself and replace
the top-hat bushes. Reassemble and you should be OK.
