I've had similar symptoms (although not identical) with a Jetta of mine. The
whole gas thing may be coincidence. In my experience I had a cracked
distributor cap and bad spark plug wires, plus my catalytic converter had
broken up and blocked my exhaust once it warmed up. The thing choked and
gagged like crazy. Not sure if any of those things are questionable on your
car, but they're worth checking.
