swapping rear axle.. couple questions

I am swapping the rear axle from my 84 Wolfie to my 84 GTI. I got the axle 
off of the rocco, and am about to take the one off of the rabbit, but I have 
a question. should I take the E-brake cables off of the rabbit to get the 
axle off? if so, how do I get the rocc's cables back into the cabin of the 
rabbit? tia
