If the cars are California cars, they're not likely to have any rust..

Hmm, are they both red, one at M&M motors in Costa Mesa, the other at Best
Deal Auto Brokers??  That M&M place sounds shady from an experience a guy
on the GTI list had.  They are VERY close to AMS - perhaps you could make
an appointment to get one or both of them examined there?  Then again I'm
not sure AMS would be my first choice for such an inspection.  There's another
good shop in OC (Huntington Beach) called Maxed Performance that I've had do
some work, family owned shop and VERY cool guy does the VW work.  Let me 
know if interested and I'll hook you up.  I'd trust this guy implicitly.
VW Specialties is right down the street but Ron is SO backed up I doubt
you'd even get in there.

I love mine so much that my spankin' new GTI GLX <VR6> sits in the garage
90% of the time....  :>
