The owner of an auto parts store where I used to live told me that it's not
legal to sell aviation fuel for use on the road.  I don't know if there's
any truth to that; it's just something I've heard.

Sure, but if you got *too* crazy with your CR, you would still have to
retard the timing from VW specs just so the ignition system was capable of
retarding it enough during operation.  I think you would probably reach a
point after which you would not benefit from further increasing the CR.
