I bought my '85 for $200 too...   previous owner thought he
had a blown transmission.  I drove it the next day after
replacing the inner cv joint.  (It even came with extra
rims / tires, and a buncha aftermarket goodies)

I've found several deals like that, and I *always* keeping
my eyes open for them.  (Free Rabbit GTI, $800 16v a couple
years ago...)
