Well, the second gear is probably the most used and abused gear in the
box. (here comes anarguement. I can feel it.) The syncro gets hammered as
a result.

But, before you decide to tear it down have you checked the clutch cable?
Sometimes it can be out of adjustment and it will be the cause for a
grind, but this is usually onlt the first and reverse gears that grind. 

Also does your shifter have alot of play in it? Might be a good time to
do a bushing job. This can cause the crunchies.

So that leaves us to what, bad syncro doesnt it? You could try and use a
synthetic gear oil which might help with the grinding. And again, the
downside is that it will leak out of your seals if they're old.
