Ideally you would like the voltmeter leads to be connected straight to
the poles of the battery, but that's kind of a pain, and I don't think
any of us in here would like to draw two extra wires through the firewall
to have the extra .1 or .2 V of accuracy. Easiest way to give positive V
to the volmeter is to tap off the +12V of the oil temp gauge.
Also: when you say "stock", you are perplexing me. I haven't seen any
VWs besides Cabriolets and Jetta GLIs that came with a stock vdo voltmeter.
