I use the OEM VW filter... VERY good filter. Actually, the BEST way to go is a
MANN diesel filter- they're bigger, flow better, filter out smaller particles,
and MANN is pretty much the best filter maker out there.
I get the OEM VW filter for $4 and the Mann for like $6.
