CV questions...

'lo people! just last week i decided to make some repairs on my 8V mk1
jetta. the outer driver's side axle was completely done in, and i had a
replacement axle that i was just going to swap in its place.

*forgive me, i don't know the proper names of the parts*

well, it turns out that a couple of parts were not the same between the
two units. the two axles were both the same diameter, as were the
splines (obviously), but inside of the inner boot, the bearings,
knuckle, and the housing that surrounds everything, and that bolts up to
the gearbox, were smaller on the donor axle.

what this means is that the insides of the driver's side inner CV are
smaller than the passenger side. i don't know the tranny code
off-hand. would this help to shed light on the matter?

the reason why i am concerned is because i have noticed that if i back
the car up, then start to drive forward again, the car will lurch
noticably, like there's a bit of play somewhere. i don't feel anything
while driving, tho i tightened up the exhaust system today, and noticed
some noise while the car is in gear.

if i have my foot on the gas, and i hit imperfections in the road, i
can hear a noise of sorts as the suspension goes about it's business of
keeping the car level. if i hit those same bumps at the same speed but
with my car out of gear, the sounds disappear.

please tell me that i haven't done something bad. and if i have, tell
me softly. ;) thanks for your help!
