I personally would replace the timing belt and all engine seals- oil pan gasket
(you'll probably do it if you have the pan off, I assume), front main seal,
intermediate shaft seal, cam seal, rear main seal (and carrier gasket), maybe
even valve cover gasket, although we all know how easy that is to replace at any
time. Clutch?
I've taken an engine out of a Golf and put another one back in in approx. 9
hours before- I bet you can do it in two days, what with replacing all of that
stuff. Maybe you might want to clean the engine while it's out, too, if you
care. I might even take the exhaust manifold off and get all the studs that
broke drilled out while it's easy, and then replace all the studs with new ones
so that it would be easy to change the crappy single outlet manifold to a dual
outlet or a header when the time came.
Just my $.02
