Determining the amount that the body repair without stripping off the paint is
tough to do - also to determine the extent of the rust damage. A cage would
cost between $500 - 800. But there is one piece of the equation that must be
taken into account - equipment. For example; harness, seat, fire system,
suspension, wheels, engine mods, tranny mods, etc. IMHO - it is cheaper to
buy an existing IT car than it is to build one (esp if you take your time into
account). There might be some value in stripping all the goodies off the free
GTi, then buy an IT GTi or scirocco. Now is the buying season for IT cars.
AFA the rules - SCCA in Colorado. Wait and get the 1999 rules - there have
been some changes from 1998. Pick up a copy of the SCCA publication
"Sportscar" and look at the classifieds. You can find VW IT stuff in there
pretty cheap sometimes (such as a 1984 scirocco for $1800 two months ago).
