tranny manipulation

does anyone know what's involved with replacing the 5th gear with a
higher ratio unit?

	i'm currently running a near-dead tranny that has basically the same
ratios as a 16V (the tranny code is 4...it's apparently froma 91 8V GTI)

	what i'd like to do is keep the existing first 4 gears, but replace the
last gear with something crazy like a .71 or something like that.  i
want lots of bottom and lots of top. tho i'll be sacrificing a little of
the middle, i hope to get my hands on a set of Shrick 260† or 268†,
which should even the gap a little. (that, and maybe a bit of NOS....but
i doubt it)

	so, how easy is this?  and also, how expensive is it?  labour aside,
how much would it cost to purchase the parts necessary, and most
importantly, what parts are necessary.  thanks
