Jacking the motor

This is precisely the method I use. I always put a piece of 2X4 wood
between th block and the floor jack.

Never had a problem in 10 years of doing this myself.

Would I be able to jack the engine up enough to work on the motor
mounts?   I know it can be done on older GM cars, but VW pans seem so
flimsy.
