I just got done dealing with the exact same problem. It has gone on for a
couple years until about a month ago when it began to not start at all every
once in a while. I tested everything from the wires to the solenoid to the
ignition switch. I finally decided that my old 170k mile starter must just be
bad. So I replaced it and it still did it. I was MAD. I took my dashboard
completely out figuring I would eventually find the fault in a wire. I did,
and it was the starter kill feature of my alarm which I had told the guy NOT
to install. So, if you have an alarm and it is connected to your starter wire
you may want to check that. HTH!!!

PS... the rebuilt starter I put in died about 3 weeks later too..... ugh.
