The engine code is stamped on the block on a little flat spot, roughly between
cylinders 3 and 4 (numbered from left to right as you're looking at the engine bay
with the hood up from the front of the car). It's just below the cylinder head, and
you won't be able to see anything on it at first. You'll have to scrape all kinds
of crap off it to see the engine code, which is stamped rather lightly. Sometimes a
wire brush works well. The engine code will be the first two letter which appear on
this flat spot. The rest of the numbers will just tell you the number in the
production run that your engine is.
